How to Plan for a Kitchen Remodeling or Renovation Project

How to Plan for a Kitchen Remodeling or Renovation Project

Deciding to remodel your kitchen is one of the best investments you can make. The kitchen is where people spend most of their waking hours while at home. It is where they cook, eat, and gather with the family. It is also where they talk and share ideas about the latest trends and fashions. Consequently, it is not surprising that the kitchen would be on the top of the list of home improvement projects. Having an up to date, modern kitchen, allows people not only to function better with new cabinets and appliances, but also enables them to feel that they are indeed living in modern society.

Kitchen remodeling however can be a very messy and disruptive home improvement project. And the length of the disruption can take as long as a month or more, even when well planned out.

To mitigate the disruption of a kitchen renovation project, planning is absolutely essential. The first item to consider is whether you will do it yourself, or hire a general contractor. Regardless of what route, a homeowner needs to first sketch out some kitchen remodeling ideas to ensure the kitchen design and costs will meet their targeted functional requirements and budget. If a general contractor is to be hired these initial sketches will be helpful in communicating your kitchen remodeling plans and ideas.

During the planning phase, the homeowner should identify the main objectives of the future kitchen. They should research the latest products on the market including: cabinets, countertops, appliances, and flooring. If the kitchen is more than 5 years old, there are a lot of new products to choose from. For example, Silestone is quickly surpassing Granite and Corian, as the premier countertop surface as it is extremely hard, elegant in appearance, and comes in many colors. For cabinets, the trend appears to be towards lighter colors as they help the appearance of lightening and enlarging a room. In regards to appliances, the Stainless Steel look appears to be in. And for flooring, vinyl or wood is the trend. Tile looks nice, however, it can be unforgiving in a room where things tend to get dropped. In addition, if there is no radiant heating planned for the floor, tile has the tendency to feel cold on the feet.

It is also important to consider any structural changes to the existing kitchen area. Is a new kitchen island desired, or will walls or doorways need to be moved or installed?

When developing your kitchen remodeling plan, it is important to note that professional kitchen designers like to think of a triangle when starting a new kitchen design. The three points of the triangle include the Sink, Refrigerator, and Stove. Make sure your sketches consider this, as it will ensure a good functional kitchen. Also, consider adequate walking areas and space for an eating area, such as a table or center island, with applicable space included for chairs. I would suggest that the walking areas be wide enough for two people to walk through at the same time.

The sketches should also include dimensions, as these will be needed when meeting with the general contractor or kitchen designer. Finally, consider where the existing outlets and power for the stove are, and assess if additional outlets will be needed or old outlets relocated.

Selecting A Down Comforter For Your Bedroom

Selecting A Down Comforter For Your Bedroom

It’s soft, fluffy and terrific to cuddle with. No, it’s not a cat. A down comforter breathes better than synthetic comforters and is much more efficient when it comes to keeping you comfortable at night. This puffy cloud of insulation is designed specifically to fit beds of all sizes, just as any other comforter is designed to do. They are manufactured in twin, queen, full size and king sizes. A down comforter is made to keep your body warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Because it breathes easier than other comforters, a down comforter allows the release of moisture rather than having it trapped inside the material.

In addition to being luxurious, a down comforter is ideal for anyone who suffers from allergies. It is important to remember, however, that consideration must be given to a product’s feather content, cleanliness and fill power. Because the down is typically cleaned, processed and inspected prior to being placed in the comforter, users do not often notice any increase in allergies. This is especially true if they purchase a down comforter that is designed to be hypo-allergenic.

When it comes to cleaning , a down comforter can be washed using mild soap and warm water. Dry cleaning may leave the down as being brittle and/or dry or may cause cleaning residue to become trapped inside the material. Special down soaps are designed for cleaning a down comforter. Some down comforter manufacturers, on the other hand, recommend machine washing or dry cleaning. The best way to determine the recommended care is to simply read the instructions on the tag found on your down comforter.

In between cleanings, you can preserve the look and longevity of your down comforter with the use of a duvet cover. Basically a large pillow case for your comforter, this product will keep it crisp in color and will protect it from stains and airborne allergens.

If you are shopping for a quality down comforter, you can expect to pay a minimum of $100.00 and the price may be even higher depending on the size, fill, thread count and overall quality. A down comforter can be found at any department or retail store in the bedding section. In addition, most online stores specializing in quality bedding offer a line of down comforter products.

The information in this article is to be used for informational purposes only. It should not be used in place of, or in conjunction with, professional medical advice. Before using a down comforter, individuals with mild to severe allergies should consult their physician to ensure the use of this product will not worsen their condition.

Basement Mold – The Most Common Place In The Home

Basement Mold – The Most Common Place In The Home

Basement mold is the most common mold that you will encounter in your home. This is because the basement is underground and is usually not developed as the rest of the house, and so is the perfect breeding ground for basement mold. It is often a storage area where there is little heat and it is also where moisture can build up from condensation on the pipes or even a leak. The mold can actually build up quite a bit in the basement if you do not keep a close watch on the conditions, such as excess moisture and damp conditions which are the prime breeding areas for basement mold.

Once mold spores settle in your basement, they will keep growing. Mold in basements can be found on wood, ceiling tiles, wallpaper, cement, sheet rock and insulation. There is no realistic way to get rid of all the basement mold that you have because mold spores are everywhere. Once you do find mold in the basement, though, you have to look at methods of basement mold removal.

You have to be careful when you are removing basement mold because once you disturb the mold spores you spread them around. Cleaning up one area could spread the mold to another part of the basement. You also have to be careful when you handle moldy materials to make sure you don’t breathe in the mold that is in your basement when you are going through the process of basement mold removal. When you set about this task, you should wear a paper facemask and gloves so that you don’t breathe in or come in direct contact with the mold.

Basement mold is one of the leading causes of allergies in homes as well as toxic mold syndrome. Not all molds are toxic, but you won’t know if the mold in basement is toxic or not until you get it tested. This is why basement mold removal is so important. Mold allergies often disguise themselves as sunus problems or flu-like symptoms and they can aggravate asthma.

When you realize that you have basement mold, the first thing you need to do is search for the cause of the mold. If you find leaks or excess moisture, you have to make the repairs to prevent the moisture from re-occurring and the mold from coming back. Then you have to take measures of basement mold removal. There are many excellent sprays and cleaners on the market that do an effective job of mold removal. You do have to make sure that you completely dry the area after you clean to prevent the basement mold from growing back.

Morning Bars Add Luxury to the Bedroom

Morning Bars Add Luxury to the Bedroom

Imagine waking up to the smell of fresh-brewed coffee, just feet away from your bed, or grabbing an ice-cold beverage and a late-night snack without ever leaving the comfort of your bedroom.

Forget the walk-in closet and the master bath; the morning bar is one of the hottest new home amenities. The typical morning bar includes a sink and faucet, small refrigerator, drawer dishwasher and small counter to hold appliances such as a coffee maker, espresso machine or even a microwave oven.

“Enriching the master bedroom with a morning bar reinforces the idea of a sumptuous retreat, rather than just a place to sleep and relax,” said Margie Rowe, senior target market manager for ShowHouse by Moen.

The morning bar is part of a growing consumer phenomenon referred to as “trading up,” which indicates that people are willing to pay extra for luxury items.

Last year American consumers spent $400 billion on luxury items that included everything from upscale cars to lavish home accessories, according to the book “Trading Up: The New American Luxury” by Boston Consulting Group Senior Vice President Michael Silverstein and Bath & Body Works CEO Neil Fiske.

The challenge for designers is tastefully blending a minibar into a room without calling too much attention to the fact that it’s actually a “mini-kitchen.” Here are a few of their strategies:

* Cabinetry: Dark woods with recessed or raised arch accents create a feeling of warmth and security, while lighter-colored wood cabinets can brighten up and invigorate the space.

* Faucet and sink: “The more popular faucet designs for morning bars are those with an elegant, traditional feel that enhance a refined decorating style, such as ShowHouse by Moen’s Waterhill Collection,” Rowe said. “The high-arc, single-handle faucet in an oil rubbed bronze finish has a warm feel that complements and blends into the color schemes of many on-trend master suites.”

* Appliances: Appliances sized appropriately to the space are key to maximizing the benefits of the morning bar. A gourmet coffee press, espresso maker or juicer provide the right touch for a luxurious morning. A wine-chilling drawer will ensure that bottles will always be ready for drinking at the perfect temperature. And a small refrigerator will keep fruits, juices and creamers handy. Wood panels ensure that drawer-sized dishwashers and mini-refrigerators blend into the existing cabinetry.

* Lighting: In many cases, track lighting typically found in the kitchen is being strategically placed in the morning bar area, along with skylights that open up and add height to the space.

Guide to Buying Living Room

Guide to Buying Living Room

After you are done with the living room in fresh wallpaper and paint, and are also through with the flooring and upholstery, how do you go ahead with buying the right furniture that goes with the color and theme? Is this a common picture you often encounter? First of all, relax. You will most certainly come across a range of contemporary living room furniture that compliments your overall décor and styling. But before you go out and shop for modern sofas, recliners and trendy entertainment units as everything else, here are a couple of things you might want to consider.

The Living room area

Ideally, the size of your furniture must be in proportion to the size of your living room. You don’t want petite furniture for bigger spaces or something too bulky that occupies all the space. Work out on your personal taste and fit it with practical details like the room size and styling.

For smaller living rooms, opt for modular and functional furniture and keep in mind that heavy upholstery can make it look all crammed. You also get furniture that can function as day sofa and be transformed into a full-fledged bed. Do not forget to fashion the space in a manner that allows open room to move comfortably. For instance, a hi-tech spread out sofa would suit larger room settings. So, measure the area and try to buy furniture with size and details in mind.

Also pay attention to where exactly in the living room you want the furniture to be placed. Once you have decided, measure the area and then keep the dimensions in mind (or jot it down on paper) and keep it in mind while your selection. It is also important to take into account the space required between the wall and the furniture while measuring.

Styling and Upholstery

Depending on your taste and the furniture style, co-ordinate rest of the décor in line with the furniture. Cushions, upholstery and curtains can be complimented in neutral, complimenting and contrasting tones. If you already have cushions and curtains that do well with the theme, use them and also add something new that provides a resting space to the whole theme. A contrasting bowl, vase and even antique items in neutral shades do well to add a personal touch to your living space.

The mantra is to explore. There are a broad variety of sofa styles to boggle the mind, but once you discover your particular style, it will be easier. Your choice of sofa seating will depend not on your taste, but also on the number of people in the family and the available amount of space (the measurements).A long sofa accompanied by one or two armchairs maybe all you need, and you will find many futon beds and modular sofa models that fill in the space with grace. The material should be chosen as per convenience and the time you can spend in cleaning.

Recliners and Rocking Chairs

Reclining armchair or sofas make great luxurious furniture. With a built-in footrest, recliners provide superior comfort. A rocking chair can be added for a personal touch of class to any living room. While recliners are mostly done in lush leather, you could add a contrasting wicker or wood rocker chair to add a more or unconventional feel.

Entertainment units/TV unit

Modern day entertainment units combine features and functionality to offer great looking furniture units to stack, store and display. Low-slung units as also regular units both look great. Depending upon the space, you can have a unit that compliments the theme and fits the space.

Coffee Tables

The coffee table makes a focal point for family and friends. A good coffee table should also offer convenient storage space to help reduce living room clutter. There are different styles and shapes that come with a choice of color and finish. You can also add a contrasting coffee table to create a great corner for relaxation and play time.

Accent Pieces

In contrast to other rooms in a home, living room helps with the first impressions. You can fashion up a theme and add art pieces that reflect a part of your personality. There are great standing mirrors that allow you to add a different dimension to a living area. Then there are variety of accent tables, stylish armoires, side tables that can add to the theme with style.

Tips To Keep In Mind While Choosing Bedroom Furniture

Tips To Keep In Mind While Choosing Bedroom Furniture

Experts believe that almost 1/3rd of our lives are spent inside our bedrooms. It’s a natural process and most of us aren’t even aware of the fact that we spend such a lot of time in our bedrooms.
Its place we go to bed at night, and the place we wake up in. We prefer it over all other rooms and try to relax in our bedrooms. This essentially means that we need to make our bedrooms as comfortable as possible and this can only be done by using the right kind of furniture.

Moreover, the furniture should also be such that it increases the visual appeal of the bedroom by escalating the beautifying effect of its decor. Here are a few tips that will help you select the best of furniture for your bedroom:

Never compromise on quality. It’s not worth it. The quality of a product is one of the most essential parameters, when you want to purchase it. This is also true, while you select your bedroom furniture.
It must come good on certain standards of quality and must be both sturdy and reliable. Don’t choose bedroom furniture that looks and feels weak. It must stand the test of time, as you are not going to replace it any time soon.

Should suit your personality
Your bedroom furniture must be a reflection of your personality. The design, size, and shape of the furniture must confirm to your needs and wants, and also be what you desire. By all means, ask for suggestions, but make sure that your furniture has been given a personalized touch.

Durability over attractiveness
It’s easy to get swayed by exquisite bedroom furniture pieces. Most people buy only those furniture pieces that look very attractive. However, this is not the best way to go about things.
If given a choice, you must always select the durability factor over the beauty factor. That is not to say that you must buy durable furniture even it it’s ugly. It definitely should look good, but that must not be the primary factor, that should help you decide.
After all, you are not going to buy bedroom furniture, on a regular basis. A good looking piece might just turn out to be of poor quality and in a short while, you will be able to hear it creaking and squeaking.
To avoid such heartbreak, select furniture that is a mixture of durability as well as elegance and visual appeal.

Give exquisite craftsmanship its due. It’s important that you put stress on the craftsmanship of the furniture. This is not only about a great looking design, but it is also about making a well-finished product that also has superior quality.

As aforementioned, you are going to spend a lot of time in your bedroom, and hence are also going to use the bedroom furniture, a great deal. This means that, one of the most important parameters on which you have to make your choice is comfort.
The bedroom furniture must be comfortable for your body. It is not necessary that it should be luxurious, but should be good enough to offer your body some well-deserved rest.
Bedroom is a place of rest, peace and relaxation. Only comfy bedroom furniture will help make that possible.

The color of the furniture or the polish of the furniture must match the décor of your bedroom furniture. The bedroom furniture that you select must not look out of place. It must gel together with all the existing pieces of furniture that might be a part of the bedroom.

Bedroom furniture is available in all kinds of sizes. It’s up to you to decide which size fits the requirements of your room size. If your room has a normal size then it would be a good idea to buy furniture that is not too big, but is just of the right size to fit into the room.
A large room not only requires more bedroom furniture than the smaller rooms, but the furniture should also be big in size. This is not a rule, but a generally accepted norm.

The market is replete with bedroom furniture catering to a host of style requirements. The choice in terms of style will make your mind boggle.
In the end, style is a matter of individual perception. There are people who prefer an old school sense of style, and select furniture that has curves and standard polish, while there are others who like the ultra-modern style of bedroom furniture.
This has stark linear lines and many a times is made of materials other than wood like steel, aluminum etc.
At the end of a hard day, you want to sink into the comfort of your bedroom and forget about the worries of that day. Bedroom furniture will make your bedroom the perfect sanctuary that it aims to be.
So choose it with care, and at the end of the day, your bedroom furniture will only be as good as you wanted it to be.

Basement Remodeling Starts With Permanent Waterproofing

Basement remodeling can add lots of extra living space to your home but beware; basement water leakage could put a real damper on your hopes if not properly corrected. There are two conditions you must address for a dry basement, actual water leakage and condensation. Water leakage is a pretty obvious concern to homeowners but many are unaware of the problems that high humidity can cause to a finished basement.

Humidity Problems

Because a basement is below ground, it will be naturally cooler than the floors above ground. When warmer air from upstairs or outside enters the basement, it shrinks in volume as it cools. This shrinking or “condensing” of the air volume results in higher humidity.

Everything porous in your basement will absorb the extra moisture in the air and cause a foul odor. Dehumidifiers are appliances which mechanically remove the unwanted extra humidity from your basement. A good dehumidifier is a must if you plan on remodeling your basement. Even a basement that doesn’t leak will benefit from using a dehumidifier.

Water Leakage

Without doubt, water leakage into the basement must be permanently corrected before you start your remodeling project. Start by correcting obvious sources of the problem; broken or non-existent rain gutters, down spouts emptying next to the foundation, ground outside sloping toward the home, uncovered underground windows, etc.

After you exhaust all preventative measures outside, try to identify areas inside where you are experiencing the leakage. If a corner of the basement seems to be a particular problem, again, look outside at your rain gutter downspouts. If you see cracks in the walls leaking, some of these can be repaired with hydraulic cement or crack injection.

If water seems to be coming in from an isolated area, installing a sump pump below floor level can lower the water table and underground hydrostatic pressure in that area. If you are unsure or your problems seem to be widespread, it might be best to call in a building inspector, engineer or other professional to help you identify and solve your problem

There are a variety of services available to solve your leakage problems. These include; outside excavating, re-parging your walls, interior or exterior drainage systems, interior cove systems, grout or epoxy injection and others. Most of these options will require a professional.

Basement Remodeling Begins

I like studding the walls out with 2X4s. If you can spare the extra space, 2X6s are even better because they allow room for more insulation. Never, under any circumstances, nail furring strips onto the walls. Penetrating the foundation will compromise its barrier against water.

Use construction adhesive rather than nails or screws to adhere your bottom wall plate to the floor. It’s ok to nail the upper wall plates into the upper floor joists.
Don’t glue down your basement carpet. Carpet is something that is going to wear out and eventually need to be replaced.

Glued down carpeting creates a real problem later on when trying to remove it. Tell your carpet installer to use construction adhesive to install the carpet tack strips around the perimeter. Do not allow them to drive nails into the cement floor.

With some common sense construction techniques, a reliable waterproofing system and humidity control, you can enjoy a lot of extra living space by remodeling your basement.
